Our Condo and Area Guidebook

Hola y Bienvenidos! Hello and Welcome! Thank you for giving us the opportunity to welcome you to our home in Paseo del Sol.  Our names are Tony and Maria and owners of this condo.  As vacation travelers, we have only the best intentions for an exclusive highlife vacation at this luxury condo resort.  We have put together this guidebook to offer information about the use of our Condo for your enjoyment.

As owners, we ask very little of you while staying here at Paseo Del Sol. We only ask that you enjoy yourselves, wear plenty of sunscreen outdoors and treat our home as yours. Of course, you can always reach us at any time before during and after your vacation. If it should become necessary to contact us while on vacation we can be reached by calling us at home or by email. Our contact information will be listed on this same page in the condo’s booklet.

We are in a very safe, clean and well-kept environment with our own 24/7 on-site security.  We have a constant supply of purified water and ice. The condominium complex is situated in a serene location between a short 2-minute walk to the beach and golf course along with the tropical wonders this area offers.  Playacar is a manicured up-scale secure gated residential resort area that defines the southern part of Playa del Carmen.  We are centrally located at the south end of Playa del Carmen near Plaza Playacar by a 10-minute walk.  This puts our guests directly within reach of Famous 5th Avenue, all coastal adventures in the Riviera Maya, popular tourist booths to reach out for the day, easy transportation, and a wonderful shopping, dining and party district.

Again, thank you for choosing us and may your stay here be everything you expected and more.

º    The condo offers complimentary toiletries. We recommend guests bring some of their everyday personal hygiene items. It’s not necessary to pack in excess on this stuff, since you can buy all these items here in Playa. Be sure to pack everything according to International Flight and Customs Regulations. By that I mean "Do not pack aerosol cans, sharp devices and lighters within your carry-on luggage". Airport Security will remove the items from going onboard or force you to put the items with your cargo luggage -no exceptions. It takes time to walk back with security, find your luggage somewhere in cargo, and repack those items. Pack Properly and avoid problems. We have a large shopping district. Playa is a popular tourist area and all your normal provisions are available.

º    Local supermarket stores are available for all prepared meal or cooking food, as well as other living conveniences. Management Services can suggest nearby supermarkets and possibly shopping cart delivery. Please inquire within. The best shopping for goods to stock up on can be bought at the following supererstores: Soriano, Mega, Chidraui, Sam’s Club, and Wal-Mart all within two miles of the condo. The first 3 are great for all your supermarket shopping needs.

º     In addition, small convenient stores are available throughout Playa. OXXO is one popular name located throughout Playa and can be easily located in the southern end of Playa near the corners of 5th and 10th Avenue.

º   You should bring your own beach towel on vacation and save the expense of paying daily towel rental when out beaching away from the condo.

º   Pool-Sauna-Gym-Tennis Court-Conference Room

§         Pool & Lounges
The pool has areas that include therapeutic massaging jets. Please ask the security guard at the front desk to turn them on for you.

§         Please, NO MATERIALS MADE OF GLASS at poolside.
This includes drinking glasses and bottles.  Please use plastic at the pool for safety. The condo uses high quality plastic-ware for your safety.

§         The Sauna, Tennis Court and Gym are available for use at anytime.

§         The conference room, if you should need it, has to be scheduled with the Guest Services/Management office before use.

Currency and Exchange

º   Currency - You will find that everyplace will take US currency and Pesos. In the downtown area of Playa del Carmen, you will find many Currency Exchanges that will convert your countries’ currency into Mexican Pesos. Some of the best rates are on 5th avenue and the banks in the area.

º   All the Currency Exchanges will list the exchange rate for that day. Most of the shops will accept your countries currency and give you change in Pesos. At the end of your stay-you can also “sell” back your Pesos and receive your countries currency. It is usually more expensive to sell it back, so every couple of days you can exchange what you feel comfortable with spending. That way, you won’t get “stuck” with a lot of Pesos to take home with you. You can always save them for your next trip down.

º   The most common Paper Peso currency is represented in denominations of  $20-$50-$100-$200-$500-$1000.

Roughly speaking and a good exchange to keep in your head is

$10 Pesos=$1.00 US; so $50 Pesos=$5.00 US

There are also coins both representing Pesos and “centavos”

There are $1 peso coins= $.10 cents US       $5 peso coins=$.50 cents US

                    $10 peso coins=$1.00 US              $20 peso coin=$2.00 US

Then there are the “Centavos” or cents:         10 centavos = 1 penny US

                                                                        20 centavos=  2 cents  US

                                                                        50 Centavos= a nickel  US

                                                            WHAT MEXICAN MONEY LOOKS LIKE

10 centavos=                          50 centavos=

.009 US cents                           .04 US cents                           Year End 2006 equivalent to U$ dollar

(not even a penny)

1 peso coin=            2 peso coin=           5 peso coin=              10 peso coin=        20 peso coin=

.09 US cents            .18 US cents           .46 US cents              .92 US cents                 $1.84 US

approximately equal to$ 1.84 US dollars

approximately equal to$ 4.60 US dollars

approximately equal to$ 9.20 US dollars

          approximately equal to$18.45 US dollars

approximately equal to$ 46.20 US dollars

approximately equal to$ 92.50 US dollars

approximately equal to $1,082 Pesos (MN)

The US Dollar

Dollars are accepted widely, as well as the Euro, Pound, Canadian, and many other foreign currencies. Mexico gets many tourists from around the world. If you are staying for a week or more, you should change the money so you can adapt to the exchange and become familiar with it. Exchange only what you think you’ll need for 2 to 3 days at a time.

For piece of mind, Most all stores and restaurants and bars will accept foreign currencies for payment, unless otherwise noted.

Taxi Rates in Playa Del Carmen

Playa del Carmen is relatively small and you can around on foot most of the time. Taxis are widely available and a journey within the town should only cost around 20-45$ pesos (2-5US$). A comprehensive Rates list will be available in the full-version of the the condo guidebook, located in our condo when you arrive.

GOOD TO KNOW TIPS

Playacar and Playa Del Carmen are convenient to get around. It’s not as big as it may seem. This condo provides all your necessities. But there are things we want you to know and things you can bring that will make your stay much better. Keep in mind you can always purchase your living items nearby your vacation condo at local convenient stores and our large shopping district. Granted, Item you purchase here may not always be name brands you use, but these products will work just as well.

Transportation: Taxi service is the bread and butter of transportation in the Yucatan peninsula from Cancun to Tulum. Public bus service and car rental service is also very available. You’ll find these services pleasant and affordable along the Caribbean coastline. Taxi and Bus Service To/From the airport can be arranged through your booking agent or upon arrival when exiting airport customs.  Once at the condo, you can find touring packages throughout the area. You can request assistance from Paseo’s guest services desk for touring packages. I’ve provided a few ideas under the “vacation tip” section.

Rental Cars: You may rent cars in advance (either to be picked up at the Cancun airport or in Playa del Carmen) from well known companies such as Hertz, Avis, Dollar, Thrifty, and Alamo. This may be a good option for those who wish to tour areas such as Tulum, Cobá, etc. Many car companies have branches in Playa del Carmen (all the big name companies and smaller local companies such as Happy Car, CP Rentals and Veloz).  Some local companies will drop off the car at your hotel and even pick it back up there once you're finished.

If you are going to rent a car, be sure to fully understand how insurance works in Mexico. The best thing to do is contact your own car insurance company and ask whether you have rental car insurance and whether that insurance will cover you driving a car rented in Mexico.  Liability insurance, which is required is Mexico, will be sold to you whether you ask for it or not, as it is required by law in Mexico.  The cost is minimal, and most quoted prices include both tax and insurance. Rental cars are expensive, and you should buy all the insurance they offer. Roads are excellent but night driving is very dangerous for a variety of reasons. Buses are a good alternative and very reasonable.

New Requirements for Travelers Between the United States and Mexico: Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative (WHTI):

Effective January 8, 2007, all U.S. citizens traveling by air to and from Mexico are required to have a valid passport to enter the United States.  As early as January 1, 2008, U.S. citizens traveling between the United States and Mexico by land or sea (including ferries), may be required to present a valid U.S. passport or other documents as determined by the Department of Homeland Security.

For more information on travel requirements, contact the U.S. embassies of the countries you're visiting. A complete list of U.S. embassies worldwide can be found at the Department of State Web site.

CRIME in the Yucatan is limited to a rare pick-pocketing or overcharging for drinks. Use common sense.

If you need help getting around, the people are friendly so just ask. Consider yourself to be in a safe suburban beach town. But try not to sway away from the hustle and the bustle on you own. It’s safer and more enjoyable traveling and walking with friends, groups and family.

Exchange Rates and Money: Mexico is a great value for your foreign dollars and much cheaper then any island vacation with the same beautiful beaches and much more activity. Mexico accepts the U.S. dollar almost everywhere you shop as US dollars are posted on items for sale. Cash has always worked best, but it’s a very good idea to bring along some American Express Traveler’s Checks as they are widely accepted and a credit card too. Mexico does accept credit cards at various locations and exchange booths. MasterCard and Visa are both accepted. Mexico will exchange most all-foreign currency. Yet, it’s sometimes best to exchange your Country’s foreign currency for Mexican Pesos, as not all Mexican businesses will take foreign currency as payment. This is something you learn if you’re not paying with American dollars. Airports always charge more to exchange currency.  You will find various exchange booths up and down 5th avenue in Playa Del Carmen and also in Playacar. I believe the best exchange rates are on 5th avenue. Take notice of the best exchange rate for the day at the various booths and banks.

Buying Tip: If you pay for items in US dollars, most storefronts and merchants will accept your paper money since US dollars are widely used in Mexico. The trade off is it’s easier for you to interpret what your spending as the prices on most items are posted in US dollars too. Yet paying with American dollars is an added advantage for the storefronts or merchants as it allows them to exchange your dollars for a better rate on any given day. Everyone working in Mexico lives to make a dollar any way they can. Just use your bargaining power with the locals and merchants as you shop for clothes, souvenir and gift items. Brand stores may not bargain with you . But try you luck and be friendly as the locals are very friendly people whether you buy from them or not. Note: Convenient stores, cafes, restaurants, movie theaters  and superstores will not negotiate as they are service-oriented businesses. The listing price is what you will have to pay.

Personal Electrical Devices:  All electric outlets in the condo use 110/115 current. This is the same voltage as what is used in the United States. If you are from a foreign country and your electrical devices do not meet these standards, we suggest you bring an electrical converter for your personal electric devices that have different plug configuration and different electric voltage configuration.

Taking Foods Abroad:  It's not recommended to bring meats, cheeses and other dairy products into Mexico. Airport customs inspectors will intervene and remove the items and possibly give you a fine.  Name brand dry foods can be brought into Mexico but you don't neet to. Playa has provisions of coffee, cereal, crackers, pretzels, chips, cookies and bottled water to name a few. You can find it all here. Everything pretty much tastes fine if not better then what you’re used to eating back home.

Coffee: Coffee blends are excellent in Mexico. While on vacation, buy some at “Sosta Café”on 5th Avenue or find other shops throughout. Have the coffee grinded for “American coffee machines”, and brew it for breakfast in your vacation condo. You can always bring coffee back home. If you do, bring it as a whole bean and grind it later. Whole bean coffee stores best in the freezer over the long term. In the shorter term, keep it in the refrigerator and grind it as needed.

DO NOT DRINK TAP/FAUCET WATER: In Mexico, Tap/Faucet Water is used primarily to take shower, washing the dishes and clothes, hands and face. It is not recommended for drinking purposes. Please use caution, as we do not want our guest to unexpectedly become sick from drinking tap/faucet water. We provide bottled water and bottled water can be purchased nearby your vacation condo at local convenient stores.

Bug Spray or Lotion is a wise thing to bring on your Mexican vacation. It can also be purchased here at a local convenient store. Wear bug spray if you are golfing, touring, walking within the biosphere or any jungle land, and anyone susceptible to swollen bug bites. Everyone has different interests while on vacation.

Tanning: Mexico has a very hot sun. Unless you are a frequent tanner basking in the sun, we recommend using a tanning lotion of 50 SPF or above at first and reapply every 90 minutes. This is especially true if you are a fare skin person. Don’t ruin your vacation with a Mexican sunburn.

Prescription Drugs should always be in their original container. Sometimes customs may ask you to identify the medicine and the name on the container. It’s not a usual procedure but it’s best to be safe then sorry, rather then put up with customs about your meds.  Always place your medicines in your carry-on luggage.

Personal Hygiene items are not provided. Please bring your own hygiene products including bath soaps, hair shampoos and toothpastes of preference. In addition, all hygiene items can be purchased nearby your vacation condo at local convenient stores, including laundry soap and dish soap.

Travel Insurance is always recommended but not required. Most credit card companies can cover your travel insurance needs or you can purchase travel insurance separately through your travel agent. Use your own Discretion.

The Ferry Boat Pier is available from Plaza Playacar going to Cozumel. Get a Schedule anytime you travel to Cozumel by ferry as they only run during the day.
